Family history of the Earl of Oxford

Earl of Oxford – The History of the House of de Vere

The history of the Earls of Oxford is closely linked to the House of de Vere, one of the most enduring noble families of medieval England. Aubrey de Vere, who received significant estates in Essex and several other counties following the Norman Conquest, is considered the ancestor. His son had the keep of Hedingham Castle built, which still serves as a reminder of the family's rise. In 1141, Empress Matilda elevated Aubrey II de Vere to Earl of Oxford.

For many generations, the de Veres linked their title with the hereditary office of Lord Great Chamberlain. Robert de Vere, the 3rd Earl, was among the barons in 1215 who forced King John to recognize Magna Carta. Later family members stood by kings as military commanders, advisors, and court officials. Their focus was not in Oxford itself, but primarily on their estates in Essex and East Anglia.

In the 14th century, Robert de Vere, the 9th Earl, gained extraordinary influence as a close confidant of Richard II. The following century was more tumultuous: John de Vere, the 13th Earl, remained loyal to the House of Lancaster, survived imprisonment and exile, and led a decisive part of Henry Tudor's army at Bosworth in 1485. Under Henry VII, he was once again among the realm's most respected noblemen.

Cultural history also owes brilliance to the name. Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl, served at the court of Elizabeth I, supported literature and theater, and wrote poetry himself. With Aubrey de Vere, the 20th Earl and royal officer, the male line of succession of this family branch ended in 1703. His daughter Diana united the heritage with a new dynasty through her marriage to Charles Beauclerk, Duke of St Albans. Hedingham Castle and numerous archives preserve the memory of more than five centuries of de Vere history to this day.
