Family history Markgraf zu Hammerstein
The noble family of Hammerstein is one of the oldest families in the Niedersachsen-Westfälische region and is documented as early as the 10th century. The earliest known representative was Count Immed IV of Hammerstein, a powerful landowner on the Middle Rhine who gained familial ties to the Ottonian dynasty through the marriage of his daughter Mathilde to Duke Otto of Saxony. Mathilde von Hammerstein, a great-granddaughter of King Henry I, was later subject to church charges for her marriage to a relative – a process that early on introduced the family into imperial history.
The main seat, the castle of Hammerstein on the Rhine near Linz, was an important strategic point in the High Middle Ages. The counts of Hammerstein controlled the river crossing and levied taxes on the Rhine trade. Their political position was based on feudal ties to the Archbishopric of Cologne and the Ottonian kings. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the family owned extensive landholdings in the Rhineland, the Eifel, and the Sieggebiet.
During the Middle Ages, the family split into several lines, some of which settled in Westphalia, others in Thuringia and Lower Saxony. Later, they mostly held the rank of knights or lords, while the noble line gradually lost influence. During the Thirty Years' War, members of the family fought on various sides, which further weakened their holdings.
