Family history Prince of Stade
The Counts of Stade were a significant Saxon noble family of the High Middle Ages with possessions in the area of the Lower Elbe, particularly around the present-day city of Stade in Lower Saxony. Their history can be traced back to the 10th century. The family was closely connected to the Saxon dukes and later emperors and played a central role in border security and administration in the north of the empire.
The most important title of the family was Count of Stade (Comes de Stadi), which they held as a count of the Reichsgrafschaft. In the 11th century they also came into possession of the important mark of the North Mark (also called „Northmarkgrafen“), a strategically important border region to the Slavic world. With this title they also bore the title of Markgraf of the North Mark (Marchio Nordensis), which significantly increased their political influence.
Especially noteworthy is Lothar Udo I. († 1057), who not only ruled as Count of Stadtholder but also became Margrave of the Northmark from 1056 onwards. His descendants continued both titles and expanded their power base through skillful marriage policy and military engagement in the service of the Emperor. The counts of Stade were also guardians of important monasteries and promoters of Christian missionary work in the Elbraum region.
In the early 12th century, the family died out in the male line. The County of Stade was subsequently claimed by the Archbishopric of Bremen, while the Margraviate of Nordmark passed to Albrecht the Bear of the Askanian lineage. With the extinction of the Counts of Stade, the direct dynastic connection of one of the oldest Saxon noble families came to an end. Nevertheless, their activities remain an important part of the medieval history of northern Germany, particularly in the expansion and securing of the imperial territory along the Elbe.
